SPH200D restart

I have a SPH200D kype phone that worked fine until I unplugged it and put it away for a while. I now want to use the phone again.
I plugged in and charged the battery, and then installed the base station and phone.
The phone now sits in its cradle saying "unregistered" and inducating a charged battery, but if I either remove it from the cradle or press the menu button (actually says "Reg" not "menu") the phone goes dead and restarts when I replace it in the cradle.

How do I get this phone to work?

UPDATE:

I have now spent some time cleaning the battery terminals and reseating the batteries, and the phone will now stay on.
However, it is still showing "unregistered" on the screen, and the only mune option is "reg.". (No "menu"). When I press "reg" it tries to register the phone with a new base and fails (I have reset the base unit to factory defaults in case that helps.)

Can anyone please tell me how to get this phone to work?

Further progress - found the advice on the support page regarding holding down the "page" button while registering. Successfully registered the handset. Now trying to sign in to Skype on the phone....
