I'll have to crack the case later but I'm using a Masscool USB-to-SATA enclosure with a WD drive (I think it is). Read speeds are 12-13Mbps and writes are 9-11Mbps, formatted EXT3.

Just a thought... if you got it at newegg they keep an online history of invoices so you could look it up, or maybe if you bought it online you might have an email invoice? Read/write speeds like that would be very acceptable to me and I'm sure to many others.

I've tried two drives now and I am considering a low-end NAS or buying a pocket desktop $80 (Foxconn R10-G3), adding 1 GB memory $16, and CPU (2.5GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core) $54, for total price $150! Then maybe run FreeNAS or WINXP and share the drives. This is about the same price as some of the diskless NAS.

Cheers,
Jim

This may be even easier..... http://hddscan.com/ , run HDDScan.exe and it will expose your drive info, also shows some interesting SMART data if your drive supports it and most new do.

I thought I would make this a sticky thread, just to see if something useful may come from it, though I expect most posts will detail drives that don’t work (which is also quite useful of course).

I'm using my USB enclosure now as a backup - I bought a Buffalo Linkstation NAS with 1TB disk for $170 at NewEgg. Write speeds with it are around 50Mbps and it has a USB port with automated backups.
