1) It doesn't work with the mac.
2) It won't play any type of music or video. 3) Only gives you choice of news programs and all of them have moved their websites so you can't access them anyway. 4) youtube only shows in a small window in the bottom right of screen. 5) The internal hard drive is inaccessible. 6) Netgear never reply to emails, so you can't get help. The manual isn't detailed enough. 7) Typing on it is disastrously slow using the remote. I thought this was supposed to be a good media player. I read a lot about it and everyone was raving about how good it is. It's not. Wish I'd kept my money. Whats the best media player out there that isn't defunct? |

Anyway, there is no "best" player, it depends on what you watch/listen to. |

Well if netgear has a support function then I might get help. I've added stuff on an external usb drive plugged into the ave but yeah it shows the folders, but a lot of stuff it doesn't play or even have sound. Like the stuff I recorded at home on my camcorder ... plays but no sound. Stuff I downloaded from youtube won't play sound either. If something happens it happens by accident... like messing around with the remote. I wish there was a more comprehensive manual ... like a book, i.e. 'Dummies Guide to Netgear Media Players'. Does anyone know of such a book? Also it's pointless playing music files to the tv (that's if the audio file will work - they're mp3). hdtv sound is pretty bad as you all might know. I bought this because it said it would play all the normal files and ones like avi ... it doesn't. I thought it also played netflix. Well it's now defunct ... as in obsolescent so any support is not there. I'll keep it though. It does show what the temperature is. Expensive thermometer though. Or I might sell it to some hapless consumer on ebay. Maybe that internal hard drive can be used elsewhere. If it's a SATA then I'll put it in my macbook. What do you think? A 500 gb drive is not to be sniffed at.

There is a freeware tool called mediainfo (found here: http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download) which gives information on codecs, etc. If you want specific analysis on why something doesn't play, you can post the full analysis here. The drive is a 3.5" SATA (a Seagate Barracuda model). |

Thanks StepenB
I might actually take out the HD and put it in my external hd case. I will then download everything I have on it, i.e. music, video, pictures. Then attach it also to the back of the ave. I have things in folders and subfolders. I had the thought that it might not like folders, especially sub folders. What do you think? I'll look into what you suggested above. I appreciate your help. Your reply makes me want to keep trying. It appears that it will only work, i.e. show folders when I use my Dell windows laptop. It doesn't seem to be able to let me use it on the macbook because it doesn't recognize me as the administrator (even though I am in the settings). |

The internal hard drive is huge! I mean it's too big for my little hd external case. I tried hooking it up without the outer case. It lights us but the hd does not not spin. I think it must need some external power source as well. So, I can't get it to show up in order to put things on it.
Tried to watch my saved videos again today. It will only play wmv movies but not them all... I'm going to have a look at them again. It says something about the file being unplayable due to a link not being there. It won't play avi and I think it says it will. Do you think the main problem is the mac files versus the windows file? I wish I could just copy stuff onto the hard drive even with my windows laptop. The windows one allows me to access file. The mac ... no chance. |
