Default Unable to keep internet connection

This is a WNR2000 v1, up to date firmware, with windows vista

After having unplugged my system for a weekend away, it has been acting up. I plugged it in, booted modem, then router, then computer. I had internet on my wireless devices. All was normal. 5minutes later, I still had a connection to the router, but not to the internet. I rebooted each device, this time connected by wire, same result.
I have reset the router, checked to make sure I have a IP listed correctly, changed out the cable connectors, relocated the devices, changed outlets....
Each time I tried something new, I would try both wireless and wired. Each time I would get internet for 5 minutes max. Afterward I would check the router, still had access, still had IP listed. I would wait several minutes after turning off devices before restarting them, as I found suggested in the forums. I have even tried a old linksys router. It worked just fine.
This router was purchased Nov 2010, and I've never had trouble with it, until now, and have routinely turned it off during storms and when away.
Looking for suggestions, besides purchasing a new one.

I have not tried replacing the firmware with an older version and then re-updating it, as I wasn't sure of the risks or if it would be appropriate.

I have a similar problem with a WNDR4000 recently updated to latest firmware. Although the Internet connection seems to be up, I couldn't get DNS to find anything. I manually set the DNS servers in the router, and it all started working. Comcast gave me this link that proved helpful:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-dn...g-on-windows-7

It also helped to connect my PC directly to the cable modem, bypassing the router, and that worked fine. Netgear may have a problem w/ latest FW.

That is interesting. I might have to play with that. Thanks for the link. I haven't spent much time manually working with DNS, but it would be good to learn. I just have to much stuff to keep playing move the wire with the modem connection.

I got frustrated and went to buy a new one, I as just going to get a low end to get by till the next round of stuff came out. Got into a discussion about what I was doing, and turns out I was probably overtaxing the router. I do a lot more with it now than when I bought it, including online gaming, so it made sense. I went and did more research and bought one from the new line of linksys. I kept finding to many references in the Netgear forums to issues similar to mine, that few could solve. So, we will see.

It would be great if this worked though as I can use it as a bridge to wire my computers in the nether regions of the house. Oh, and I did play with firmware yesterday, it didn't change anything at all (tried all 4 versions available).

Thanks again and I'll let you know if it works at all.

Well I got tired of dealing with it lazersgm. I tried everything I could find here, and while it didn't get worse, nothing helped. I decided to replace it, did research, and determined to go with a bigger/badder router. I also noticed this was a common problem in the forums for Netgear and somewhat in Linksys. So I bit the bullet and went the the brand new last month hardware from Linksys. I wanted it quickly, so went down the street to my local tech store. Found the right guy to talk to there. He asked what the problem was to make sure I wasn't buying in vain. After explaining everything, he said that it is a common problem suffered by many people. He explained that I had overtaxed the router by trying to do things it wasn't designed for. I argued because it was listed on the side of the box. He laughed and said, "yeah it will do it, but not for very long." I got it and was happy with the explanations, especially when I went back to the forums and started comparing what people were doing with what router for how long, and it seems to be a common element. So, I bought a router that can handle my current load and those things I might add in the next 2 yrs.

So far I am happy with my Linksys. It is different, but I have control from my cell phone, which is nice, just trying to tweek it a little more now. I guess I am suggesting that you start looking for a new one, and make sure the it does more than you need to be safe.

Good luck lazersgm

Updating the firmware should fixed it. But make sure you hard reset the router after updating it. And after configuring to gain back the connection, you can lower down the MTU size to 1492. YOu can also lower down the fragmentation length and cts/rts threshold from 2346/2347 to 2304.
