Angry XVID Video file problems

For some time now, I have had difficulty with DIVX files. I can view these without difficulty if I copy them to a data DVD and watch them on my DVD player (in AVI format).

The media is stored on Network Attached Storage and speed checks confirm greater than 20 MB transfer speed. Music and pictures on the same NAS can be played or viewed without difficulty.

I was using firmware version 2.0.159 since it went gold in February. The problems started soon thereafter. I am now on firmware version 2.1.81, and continue to experience the same problem.

The error I receive is pretty consistent. It reads as follows:

Unable to play this media. The media format is not supported or the location is not accessible
Video: XVID MPEG -4 (640 X 384)
Audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3, 48.0 KHz, 2 channels.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

pbrac

There was a discussion in the beta forum last week that sounds like your issue. The advice that worked was:

1) Unplug the unit, count to 10 and plug it back in.
It may work at this point.

2) Setup (re-check) your shared folders to scan on the EVA (under administrative settings I think)...and do a full re-scan for media files.
Though of course, unplugging the unit is generally not recommended by NetGear.

I re-installed FW 2.0.159 and rebuilt the library. This fixed it for the most part, although I occasionally still get hiccups with some files. I then force a restart and that solves the problem for awhile.

I guess I have to live with it for now.

Thanks for the suggestions.

You're one lucky guy. I have the exact same problem and no solution found here or in the beta forums works. I even had to use the recovery tool because of one failed FW upgrade and it's still a no go. My files play for 30 seconds and then I get this message.

Guess I'm good for an exchange.

This sounds like a network issue. Can you provide a little more information on where your media files are, and how your network is set up?

Did it ever play them? If not, the first thing to check is the file protections.

You could also post the mediainfo (google mediainfo and download it) analysis of one of your files.

Shortly after posting, the unit crashed and re-booted, I have had to locate my internet again and all is back to normal, all playing ok now. Must be the hot weather we are having in the UK at the moment!
metroman.
