Hi. Sorry to bother you fellows but a few weeks back i purchased 2 GA311 Network adapter's and when i went to install the driver it goes though the process then stops and says with the following error. "An error has occurred, the system cannot find the file specified." I have tried the support page but there is nothing there about this that i can find, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Where in the process is it having the problem? When you unzip the file or after the found new hardware wizard?

the probleme is when i go to install it, it will find the driver or if i locate it directly to the driver but it will copy it over then it halts and says error can not read from disk. so I download the driver's and save them to the desktop and do the same and exact same error.

This sounds like the problem I am searching for answers to:
I am moving some GA311 cards from my linux computers to my windowsXP compters. the first moved fine the second fails in the fould new hardware wizard The reason given: The system cannot find the file specified. XP service pack 2 I have tried all 3 cds (I bought 3 cards) build a floppy with the XP drivers downloaded them from the web, all produce the same result Device Manager properties for the GA311 shows The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28) Found New hardware finds it. locates the drivers where ever I point it when I answer "auto" or manual "next" chose the c:\windows\inf\netga311.inf or where ever else I pick then do "next" I get the "The system cannot find the file specified." window I have a phone call in to tech support but then haven't returned it |

No solutions to this one yet, eh? I've got the exact same problem. Once the "Found New Hardware" wizard starts it gets as far as asking which version of the driver to use, creates a System Restore Point, then fails with the "cannot find the file specified" error message. Does NOT tell you which file it cannot find, though.
Tried a manual install, tried using the Version 6 CD to erase everything and redo it, tried everything - but to no avail. OS is Windows XP, SP2 Guess a call to Netgear is in order - if they'll talk to me. |

Well, they didn't talk to me. After wading through their phone tree and sitting listening to dead air for quite a while a fellow who sounded vaguely Indian or Pakistani picked up the phone, said "Hello" and immediately hung up on me without waiting for my reply.
So I tackled the problem myself and I solved it. I could be wrong, but I suspect the problem comes about because one of the files in the drivers folder is a zero-length file and either it doesn't copy over on some machines or it causes the installer to abend. I installed 4 GA311's in 4 different PC's last night and only one of them bombed out with the not-found error message. So I went to the drivers folder on the CD and manually copied the files into their respective folders (the .INF file goes into the INF sub-folder of the Windows folder (but you knew that), while the .CAT and .SYS files go into the \System32\Drivers sub-folder of the Windows folder). I rebooted, the new hardware was detected, and the installation completed without a hitch. The only thing was that the monitoring tool didn't get installed, so I ran setup again right from the CD with the NIC in place and it took care of that for me. I'm happy to say all 4 are firing at the full gig and everything's sweet as. I hope this information is of help to someone. |
