Default Seagate Barracuda SATA 1TB Drive

I would VERY much appreciate some assistance. I bought an SC101 3 years ago, fooled around with it and attempted an install, and never got it running on my home network. Today I went to Fry's and bought a 1TB Seagate Barracuda SATA 1TB drive, model # ST310005N1A1AS-RK drive for $69! Just couldn't pass it up.

Now I'm trying to figure out if I can use it in my SC101. I've downloaded the manual, as well as firmware and software updates, but that's all I've done. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've got a very simple network: a Dell Desktop and Dell Laptop, along with a couple of networked printers. I've got a Cable Modem hooked to a Linksys WRT160N router.

Thanks in advance for assistance from any/all of you! I just joined the forum.

Les

Sorry - my question is: is there any way to know if the drive I purchased will work in the SC101 BEFORE I take it out of the box and unwrap it?

Since then, I've tried to reinstall my existing drives (both of them Seagate Barracuda 300GB drives, and neither one will format. It allocates the 279 GB of space correctly, but then after a minute or two, it comes back and tells me the formatting failed. It gives me this error on both drives (they are identical - I have them in the left and right bays).

Any ideas? I can't find anything with regard to troubleshooting the problem.

Thanks!

Les

No - it won't. You purchased a SATA drive, the SC101 does not support SATA.

If your SC101 is a SC101T for SATA disks it will be compatible.
But if the 1TB Barracuda will work is something that only other users of the same type can tell you.

Re your problems with the 300GB drives:
  1. Disable/remove any software firewall. This includes Windows own. (see also my post #9 ):
    1. Disable Windows firewall:
      1. Click on Start
        1. XP: click on Run - an input command line appears after 'Open:'
        2. Vista: goto to the 'Start Search' entry line
      2. Enter "services.msc"
      3. Navigate to Windows Firewall Services
      4. Set Startup type to 'Disabled'
      5. Under Service Status click on the 'Stop' button
    2. Other firewalls need to be configured to have port 20001 UDP open and some also need an exception rule for the SCM.exe.
    3. ZoneAlarm is not compatible with the SC101 system and has to be removed from the system. This might also be necessary for other software firewalls.
    4. Internet security suites that cannot be configured as needed have to be removed and re-installed without the firewall component.
    5. In general, there is no need for any software firewall in addition to the hardware firewall (NAT) that exists in every router. Netgear routers have additional firewall features such as SPI and DoS.....
  2. Do a long reset (~ 60 sec.) while the SC101 is powered on and attach using the SCM.
  3. If after step 1 and 2 you still cannot attach, then post a 'z-scan listall' and 'z-scan getpart' for each found partition. See my sticky How to post 'listall' and 'getpart' information - the complete guide for more information.
