Default Computer won't detect router

I recently bought a Netgear RP614 router. I hooked it up to my Dell desktop via ethernet. My current set up is Motorola SURFboard modem connected to the cable outlet, powe outlet, and router; The router is connected to the modem and the PC. However, when I try and install the router onto the computer, I can't b/c it doesn't recognize it as being connected. I have multiple ethernet ports. The lights come one when the ethernet cable is plugged in, so I am pretty sure they are not bad. The whole idea of this is to be able to use my laptop wirelessly, but I can't until I set up a new network, which I can't do until the router is installed.

Help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Default Re: Computer won't detect router

1. turn off the cable modem and unplug ethernet cable
2. wait for few min (5min)
3. turn on the cable modem only and do NOT plug any ethernet cable
4. wait until all the light up on cable modem
5. ONLY after all the light is up. hook up a router behind the cable modem
6. you should able to get public IP from the ISP and it will show up in the router status when you login the router.
