Default FVS318G -> Wake On LAN

hi

Does FVS318G support Wake-on-LAN?
I'd like to start my home computer over Internet, that means FVS318G should accept and forward Magic Packet.

Technically - what you are trying to do is not Wake-on-LAN, but Wake-on-WAN, because you are trying to wake the first system from a second system that is not on the same LAN.

To make a long story short - No - it's not supported.

Since I know that someone will take umbrage at that statement - Wake on LAN does not require any support on the router and will function with any router, and even without a router (I can even do it with two PCs and six feet of network cable, no router, no switch) - Wake on WAN however, is different and will require the router to support ip direct broadcasts.

Feel free to search the forum - the topic has been beaten to death before.

No, it does not support broadcasts coming from the WAN, by design.

BTW does FVS318G support at least Wake-on-LAN, I mean in LAN instead of Wake-on-WAN?

If you check my previous reply, you'll see it says Wake-on-LAN does NOT require support on the router.

Wake-on-LAN uses a "magic packet" which is nothing other than a network boadcast which contains the target MAC address repeated sixteen times consequtively - the integrated switch will "flood" the broadcast packet to all ports, and assuming that the target device supports (and has been configured for Wake-on-LAN) it should recognize it's MAC address and wake.

As I mentioned Wake-on-LAN can be done with two computers and a length of network cable, no switch, no router.
