A more productive approach would be to contact Microsoft and put pressure on them to fix or reverse the changes they made that originally caused this problem. Or as mentioned earlier, just not install (or uninstall) Windows Live Essentials 2011.

No, this is not true. The mediaplayer is supposed to be compatible with Windows 7. Whether this includes Windows Live or not, does not matter. I don't like the application, but do need it to be able to play several games. So I can't (and don't want to) uninstall it.
If there is a problem with software, because it has problems with an OS, it's logical both companis work with eachother to solve this. The employees from those companies know what's wrong and can talk about it. This os a lot more useful than users try to explain the problem, which they hardly know how to do that.
Most importantly is this: The software has only 1 function; communicate between the PC and the mediaplayer. And it is not able to that (anymore), so it needs to be patched. It's a fault with the software, and thus should be solved by the creators.
The explanation that Netgear won't do anything because the equipment is EOL is really bad. First of all, I bought mine about 1 year ago, so it's not that old. Secondly if Netgear really works this way, I know now that I will never again buy anything from them, since as soon as they decide it's old, I have no supprt whatsoever. Normally you buy something more expensive and form a certain brand, because you expect to be using it several years. Your logic is counter-productive.
Anyway, I expect Netgear to solve this ASAP, or I need to buy another mediaplayer and will be very dissapointed with Netgear.
