....Only after I have successfully logged into the router and Windows has created a network profile does the SSID's show up in the "Windows Network Connections" list. The profile contains, among other things, the router's MAC Address so that the SSID can be associated and displayed.

For me, I don't have to be logged into the interface to see it, I just look at the Survey window, which is Trendnet's terminology for the window that shows all the active connections in the neighborhood. But I think I see what's going on. It's like you said Devor, The SSID is being displayed because it's exists in the profile window. I think that is what is causing the SSID to show up in the active list.
And as far as the behavior, it works like this; when I first click the icon to view the active list, I don't see my SSID, but I do see my Mac and the type of security. However, if I click refresh, then my SSID shows up as well. So like you said, I think the active list is just getting my SSID from the profile. So it's not a netgear issue, it's just the way the software works.
On a side note, I wish I knew of a way to hide my Mac address, even from snoopers. Less info is better. But I guess it's like an IP, it's needed so it can't be hidden. I also wish I could hide my license plates on my car when I need to speed..Hehe.. J/K
