Default How to upgrade storage space

Hi,

I currently have a 2Tb and a 1Tb hard drive installed using jbod but are now starting to run out of space so would like to upgrade the 1Tb to a 2Tb. I have purchased a 2Tb drive to replace the 1Tb but wasn't 100% sure how to swap the drives without loosing data. Would the steps below work? :-

1. Shutdown the Stora

2. Remove the current 2Tb hard drive, leaving the 1Tb in drive bay 2

3. Insert my new blank 2Tb drive in bay 1

4. Start the Stora and when prompt, select the raid option (1Tb to 2Tb)

5. Once the Stora has finished it's 'raiding' (yes that's a made up word!), shutdown the Stora

6. Remove the 1Tb from drive bay 2

7. Insert the original 2Tb drive from step 2 into drive bay 2

8. Start the Stora

Would this work?

No. The Stora acts like a standard RAID system, which means to change drive sizes you would need to back up all of the data, replace the drives with larger drives and format, then copy all of the data back on to the system.

Hi,

Sorry for borrowing the thread but I've got the same problem.
I've got a 1 TB disc that's full and just installed a 2 TB disc in JBOD-mode because I thought that I could copy data from one disc to another.

Can I instead switch to RAID1-mode so that a mirror will be made (the 2 TB-disc will function as a 1 TB-disc) and then replace the 1TB disc for another 2 TB? If yes, will I then get a total of 2 TB in RAID1-mode?

Brgds,

Jimmy

No, doing this will make the new 2TB disk formatted into a 1TB disk after the RAID has finished. Then if you put another 2TB drive in in-place of the 1TB drive, that new 2TB will also be formatted into a 1TB drive. Giving a total of 1TB in RAID. The only way to get the full 2TB RAID is to copy all of the data off of the Stora, install the new drives and then copy back.

Hmmm... sounds like a big project. Can I connect an ordinary formatted NTFS-disc via USB to the Stora to move all the data from it and then copy it back the same way, after having installed the new discs?

Yes you can. It's slow but I have done this.

Yes - if you can get the USB working with the connected disk. Success rate among Stora users is not extremely high with the USB. Beyond that, if you have about 1TB on your disk now, transfering off over the USB and then back on over the USB will likely take slightly less than forever.

Best bet is to attach your staging disk to a computer via SATA or eSATA and then copy through the network from/to between the Stora and the disk.

seconded, copying 150+ gb off mine to a USB drive took nearly 2 days

Okey, I'm almost done now but I need you to confirm one more thing before I perform tha last operation. I've copied all the data from my 1 TB disc, swapped to a 2 TB disc that operates in single disc-mode (JBOD). Now I want to install an additional 2 TB disc and change to RAID1-mode. Will this action affect the data on the first disc?

A warning is shown when I'm about to do this "You may lose your entire media library.
One or more of the selected drives currently contains data.
All data will be erased from the drive if you continue with this configuration."
