Hello there.
I've got a Stora with its original disk. I purchased an identical disk that is now plugger via usb for to do backups. I have the Premium licence, so I configured the backup feature. So slow... 3 hours for 5GB.... Sometimes it also returns file system error, no idea how to troubleshoot, I'm searching for a log or something else... Does anybody know if this exists? Then, it seems it does only a simple copy, without compression. It should sync anytime backup is schedules, does anybody know if it does an incremental or differential backup or if it copies everything all the times? Thanks everybody! |

Hello,
I wish I could answer your questions but I do not use the backup feature. I was afraid that it would backup the complete disk of which I do not want to do. So, I opted instead of using Desktop Mirror and only adding folders that I specifically wanted to backup. I've had my share of problems with this Stora for the almost two years I've had it now. But, I have not used it enough to become very familiar with it up until this weekend. I am now confident of Desktop Mirror and it's efficient backup usage. If I were you I would read the online documentation that you can get to from the help menu, not just once or twice, but several times. I have found today that certain things popped out to me that starting making sense of how this box works with the supplied software. But, keep posting your questions and results. It will only help those of us who have ventured this far for the help and direction needed. I'll monitor your venture and hope that you find good luck with your intended usage of the Stora box as I have now. |

Hello there.
I've got a Stora with its original disk. I purchased an identical disk that is now plugger via usb for to do backups. I have the Premium licence, so I configured the backup feature. So slow... >I'm re-reading your post and am going to offer what I can now. Try opening task manager and see what processes are running. Maybe something there is hogging the resources. It may just be slow for the first time backup also. I've learned the network can be slow for large file transfers, even on the home network. 3 hours for 5GB.... Sometimes it also returns file system error, no idea how to troubleshoot, I'm searching for a log or something else... >I also get the same file errors on files that 'vanish' it's reported and still have no idea what it means. Does anybody know if this exists? Then, it seems it does only a simple copy, without compression. >I have not read anywhere where it does compression but only original sizes. It should sync anytime backup is schedules, does anybody know if it does an incremental or differential backup or if it copies everything all the times? >In the options you can set it to 'overwrite' or create a 2nd file of the same but with an appended name. It's all in the documentation. Thanks everybody![/QUOTE] |

You see, I'm reading your post for the third time now. You haven't posted back how you were doing though. You asked about compression in your original post. You seem to come from the same oldschool mindset as me whereby you learned early only to backup using compression to save disk space. It's a wonderful idea to be sure. I started out with my Stora using Acronis 10 and backing up my complete hard disk as one large image file. It was fun at first but as I more into playing with the Stora and wanting to understand how best to use it, I gave up on backing up a compressed image file of the complete hard drive. The reasoning behind it was that if I had to buy a new computer and then have to restore that image to the drive in the new computer, there would be trouble. Particularly if the new computer came with a newer or different operation system. Mainly, because of driver files that would be different for the new motherboard. You'd boot after restore and then all sorts of errors would pop up. I've been down this road many times in the long ago past each time I replace computers. And with WinXp it was nothing but problems.
So, currently my goals are to have original files only backup for specific folders and not any operarting system folders or files. And, ideally, yes, to be able to have enough room on the NAS box to hold the compressed hard drive image files and get back to that idea. But, for that to happen I will need to ugprade the 1tb drives to two 2tb drives next upgrade. Currently hard drive prices had went back up in price and I'm waiting to see what's going to happen with that. Solid state drives are starting to be found more now too. That could be a option. This is all so much fun but time consuming. I had the time and the mental state this morning to put all this in perspective like I've been wanting to do for a long time now. Good luck to you! I'll be following how you do. |

At the moment I backup onto NTFS formatted USB disk, files are stored as they are and the disk can be connected to windows.
Support says first backup is slow, it's taking days... |

I gave up using the usb backup for this very reason, I also found it unreliable and failing alot. It's ok if you are looking at small amounts of data but for a reliable and quicker solution the way to go is rsync and copy over the network to another nas type location or cloud backup. Unfortunately by default the stora doesn't have this setup so it's something you need to hack onto the box but once setup you can just leave it. I have folders copied from 1 nas to another on a daily schedule and it never fails and is generally a lot quicker than usb but in real terms still only 10 - 20 mb so 1st time copy does take a while. It also means you can locate your backup in a different part of the house. Hopefully rsync will feature in a future release of stora. it's already there as the usb backup is using it already i believe but its only one way so if you have two stora's you need to setup one up as a listener which is what i had to do via openstora.
