Default Connecting two 3700 using WPS

Is it possible to connect two 3700 Wireless routers using WPS? I know the difference between WPS and WDS. I currently have my two 3700s connected with WDS with no security since I'm using the 300M setting and WEP is not an option. I've taken the some steps to make it harder for the average user to connect to my network, but I want to have a little peace of mind that my home network is not being expoited, hence wanting to use WPS to communicate between two 3700 wireless routers.

WPS is not an encryption algorithm itself, it is just a way to simplify the setup of wireless encryption for the user, and in fact it uses WPA/WPA2. Now as far as I know the WNDR3700 using WDS can only do so with WEP or no encryption at all, so I suspect you can’t use WPS and WDS at the same time.

I'm well aware that WPS is not an encryption algorithm. And yes, with WDS you can use WEP at 54Mb, but anything above that and WEP is not an option. And if WDS (wireless repeating) is enabled, WPS is disabled.

it will not connect two of 3700 with WPS

it must extender such as wn2000rtp , WHDE111 and WPS capable wireless adapter

2 of 3700 will be using WDS with WEP/54Mbps throughput

Sorry to dig up this thread,

I am having the same issue and trying to figure out the best way to connect my 2 routers (3700 as well) together wirelesly.

Since I too need to use 300mbps connection between the 2 what sort of options do I have for security reasons?

Thanks

When I made an enquiry to Netgear over this, the answer I received was that it is due to the fact that they didn't create WPA & WPA2. So I guess that the have to pay royalties to allow two devices to connect using anything other than WEP or no encryption.

There are custom firmwares available for the WNDR3700. It might be worth investigating to see whether they would support this feature better.

I think the problem is more historical than that. WDS is not standardised, because there are (or were) problems in transferring rotating keys with WPA2, and to maintain interoperability between different manufacturer devices, most manufacturers restricted WDS to use WEP. This is the case with some of my older routers from other manufacturers e.g. Buffalo.

I expect that WDS (and repeaters) will slowly fade away as mesh networks become more prominent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11s

There's mention of the problem with rotating keys here (read the 'Technical' section);
