It seems like it would be easier to buy the Powerline stuff and then have the house wired to accomodate them! Of course, then I'd have the cat5e run where I want it and could toss the powerline stuff in the trash - which I probably will regardless.

I already have two HDX101s die on me. Another words, just the power light is lit up and nothing else. Yes, I have been through the whole troubleshooting cycle with try a different outlet in the same room.

DON'T TRUST THESE DEVICES AS YOUR ONLY SOURCE OF ACCESS TO THE INTERNET. Have a backup plan.

Need help with this: I have a set of 2 Netgear Powerline AV Ethernet Adapters, model XAVB101, which worked fine connecting 2 laptops w Windows Vista and bringing the internet to both. For this I have been using a Linksys router
WRT 160-N, v. 2.

Then I got laptops with Windows 7 and downloaded the Powerline Utility v. D2.0.0.8 which supposedly upgrades compatibility to Windows 7 for these Netgear products.

Meanwhile I also changed my internet service to DSL provided by my phone co.

But the powerline lights in the middle of each Adapter do not come on, and there seems to be no communication between the Adaptors. I tried factory resets but so far, no results. Also tried the classic turning the router and DSL modem on and off.

Any troubleshooting or fixing suggestions? These will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I too have a pair of XAVB101's which have been working fine for over a year. I have one connected to my Virgin router box upstairs and the other connected to my laptop downstairs. About 3 weeks ago the network kept dropping and it's now got to the point that I get about 2 minutes (if I'm lucky) before I get 'No Internet Connection'.

I have tried a factory reset on both the Powerline adaptors, a factory reset on the Virgin router and a complete format / reinstall of Windows 7 on the laptop but this hasn't resolved the issue.

If I connect the laptop directly to the Virgin router it's fine and if I connect another laptop to the powerline adaptor it's fine. I currently have an old Linksys router between the Powerline adaptor and the laptop which keeps the network from dropping.

Anyone have any idea's, why when the laptop is connected directly to the Powerline adaptor, the network will drop?

With respect, you need to improve your logic: the complaint was not that the utility was useless, the complaint was the advice to use the utility was useless, because the advice did not clearly identify which utility and where to find it.
A common problem with knowledgeable people is assuming other people have knowledge they do not have.
As a professional instructor who is always aiming to avoid assuming my students possess "common knowledge" I see many forum experts make this mistake when giving advice.
