Hi, I am having performance probs now with WGN824 and I keep running into support references to "Bridge Mode." I am using PPOE connection from router to ISP, and I have a local lan behind the router. Web pages get progressively slower over time, fixed with a power-on/poweroff...for a bit. I am using Azureues to download files. My ISP has no clue when I say please place the router in Bridge mode. Is that like in XP networking, bridge two network connections?!? Please help...
thx bs |

If you have a modem which is also a router then Full Bridge Mode would effectively turn off the router functions and it would operate as a simple modem. Having a modem which is also a router, and then connecting another router leads to duplication of functions like DHCP, NAT, SPI etc, and also in many cases IP conflicts. What make and model number is your modem?

So, my problem is still this, using the mentioned connection. After some period of time using the router and P2P program Azureus, the router seems to get clogged (Azureus however remains to work, but I loose SMTP connectivity and web pages stop.) A hard boot (power off) seems to restore the connectivity but then after some time (1 hour to 10 hours) it happens again. This rots. Can u recommend a diagnostic procedure for that? Even without Azureus running it happens too...but I am trying to get an important torrent right now so it's hard to test this for too long. When the connectivity stops, I wish there was some tool somewhere to tell me whats wrong. All seems well in the router config. I am thinking of trying a DMZ next, but the problem hits all computers on the lan, pointing to a router problem. Any ideas? thanks!!! Bs |

If you have a direct connection to your ISP through a ‘hole in the wall’ then sometimes there is a card fitted to the PC, not in your case I suspect, and in others what comes from the ‘hole in the wall’ is essentially what you would see if it were a router. You may also have some software application running on the PC which is needed to make the connection to the ISP.
If you type ipconfig /all at a command prompt when the PC is connected and operating on the Internet without the Netgear router, that information should be useful. You can also type ipconfig /all > C:\iptext.txt which will copy output to a text file on your c: drive for copying and pasting. |

Thanks for that MAD, using RASPPOE software adaper, I can direct connect to ISP using one machine fine, when the router is added to the loop things get flakey. I have narrowed the problem down to a problematic program Azureus (it's just a pain to configure) and with that not running all has been fine all day today. There is a setting there to limit simultatious connections, so I tried 50 from unlimited). No dice. There is a post here in this forum about the 824 not being able to handle lots of connections at once, so I suspect now this is the problem. So what to do? We depend on torrents here for everything on the lan, and this is the only router we have working at the moment (it's brand new
). Well, keep those thoughts coming. My problem now is getting Azureus running on this router...and still have decent web page access. So far I can have one or the other. BS |

I have read many times in the older version of these forums that too many simultaneous P2P connections can cause problems, though I can’t say for sure which routers are affected. I suspect this is a trial and error exercise for you. Is there any real impact in reducing the number of connections, I don’t use P2P so don’t know?

If your ISP allows multiple PPPoE sessions for one account, you can put the router in bridge mode and let each PC use its own PPPoE session.
You can also use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) to let one PC handle the routing. |
