Default Re: Failed to install the Z-SAN storage class filter driver

Here i am
this is the second part of the previous message.

I installed debugview and reading the log i saw a failure in accessing a key registry : Deleting residual GenDisk registry entries under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDevi ceDatabase\gendisk -
DeleteGenDiskEntry(): Cannot open GenDisk registry entry, error=0 .

I've tried to remove this key but i received the message "access denied" ,so I've exported the key , i've changed the protection of the key and i was able to delete it. I reinstalled SCM and then everything was ok.

I run the utility , but when i tried to attach my disc windows was not able to install the driver Z-SAN_DK ( see previous message ) . In the forum i didn't find any post regarding this error . thank if you could have same new suggestion
Nothing is working but i'm doing a good training ...

i'm sorry the description of the error in the previous message was not complete , the entire message was:

After removing this key the installation was succesful, but now i've the problem reported in the last messages

Thats very good information bagamau!

When you attempt to attach the drive does the DebugView show any additional information?

When changing the permissions did you use regedt32 ?

Default Re: Failed to install the Z-SAN storage class filter driver

thanks for your help , Orbital.

1) i run debugview during the procedure of the attachment of the disc and it seems to me that there is only one failure during the installation of the device

[3160] 12/02/2007:17:56:44 C:\Dev\bLSM-2.10.9.01\CoInstaller\ZSANcoinstaller.cpp 59
[3160] 12/02/2007:17:56:44 CoInstalling Device
[3160]
[3160] 12/02/2007:17:56:44
[3160]
[3160] 12/02/2007:17:56:44 C:\Dev\bLSM-2.10.9.01\CoInstaller\ZSANcoinstaller.cpp 67
[3160] 12/02/2007:17:56:44 Failed to get Device registry property:13

2) yes i used regedit to change authorization.

i tried also to deinstall the utility, clean the registry where the key zetera , zns , z-san appear and reinstall. The installation was good, but xp is still not able to install the driver Z-SAN_DK (access denied). if i check under the peripheral of the system i see the yellow dot under disc unit . i've executed the driver installation procedure from xp ( without the utility ) with debugview running , always the same error : Failed to get Device registry property . bye and thank you

Hi ya.

I've used DebugView as well and got the same error massage about GenDisk:
[6136] 12/03/2007:01:12:20 C:\Dev\bLSM-2.10.9.01\Tools\ClientInstall.cpp 92 Z-SAN-drivers installation version - 2.0.2
[6136] 12/03/2007:01:12:20 C:\Dev\bLSM-2.10.9.01\Tools\ClientInstall.cpp 125 Installing Windows Platform key for ZSAN software
[6136] 12/03/2007:01:12:20 C:\Dev\bLSM-2.10.9.01\Tools\ClientInstall.cpp 136 Successfully installed Windows Platform key for ZSAN software
[6136] 12/03/2007:01:12:20 C:\Dev\bLSM-2.10.9.01\Tools\ClientInstall.cpp 177 Deleting residual GenDisk registry entries under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDevi ceDatabase\gendisk
[6136] 12/03/2007:01:12:20 C:\Dev\bLSM-2.10.9.01\Tools\ClientInstall.cpp 298 DeleteGenDiskEntry(): Cannot open GenDisk registry entry, error=0
[6136] 12/03/2007:01:12:20 C:\Dev\bLSM-2.10.9.01\Tools\ClientInstall.cpp 182 Failed to cleanup Gendisk registry entry from earlier driver installation, aborting installation
I've deleted the GenDisk folder in the registry but I still can't install and I still get the same error message in DebugView. I'd really appreciate it if anyone has any more tips.

Thanks

I'm still doing research on these errors.

It sounds like there is a permission problem in the registry

I have a vista machine that I'm having similar problems -- removing specific registry values.

I'm unable to delete the keys because "Access Denied" I can't even change the permissions of the registry keys.

If I find out any information I try to keep everyone up to date.

That's weird because I could delete the key in my registry (I am running XP Home), but it hasn't made any difference to the installation failure. It's got me stumped.

Question Re: Failed to install the Z-SAN storage class filter driver

I have the same problem here. I have three computers. One with XP Home Media and two with XP home. Two out of three, one of which was the home media version, work fine. The third gives this "Failed to install the Z-SAN storage class filter driver". My data is there from the other computers. I look forward to learning from hard work.

So I'm not alone!

I too have installed the utility on 2 machines but it failed with this error message on a third (actually, this is a multi-boot machine and it installed successfully in one boot partition but not another).

All OS's involved are Win2K SP4. On the failing machine I tried safe mode and also disconnecting from all networks (tech support suggestion) ... no good.

One comment about difficulties someone is having with registry changes. There is no mention of whether the user is logged on as administrator. I would thing you would need to be. In fact I would think you waould need that for this whole installation process.

*** FOR ADVANCED USERS ONLY! USE AT OWN RISK ***

OK, Everyone - I think I found some USEFUL information regarding the problem everyone is receiving. . .

As dnaman Suggested you need a ADMINISTRATOR/OWNER account to make permission changes, however the I ran into a problem where I could not make any changes because the SYSTEM/OWNER had no access to the keys, no matter what I tried, I could not change the permissions. . .

Here is what you need to do to reset the permissions.

you will need SubInACL from Microsoft's website.

after installing SubInACL

Create a file called reset.cmd edit the file and copy and paste the following code:

Code:
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f
And save the file to C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\

Then run reset.cmd

Now you should be able to DELETE the problem registry values.
NOTE: Make sure you have a backup of your REGISTRY before making any changes.

If you're still unable to change the registry permissions something in the OS is changing the PERMISSION you will need to contact MICROSOFT.
