Hi,
Loaded Ubuntu on my sisters Dell Latitude & was amazed how much faster the PC ran. Would now like to put it on my old Dell 8100. There were no driver issues on the Latitude however it looks like there may be with the WG511v2 install. Before I create a forum id @ Ubuntu thought I might try findig an answer here - per Ubuntu I Must use ndiswrapper and a few tweaks If chipset = Prism - Substitute the v3 drivers in the howto for the Win2000 drivers off the netgear cd If chipset = Marvell - The driver is not easily accessible on the CD but the WG311 driver works as it is the same chipset Found this old article on ndiswrapper. http://verens.com/2005/02/21/install...pset-in-linux/ To install the card under Linux, you need to run the Windows driver through a wrapper. In this case, ndiswrapper. How do I know if Prism vs Marvell chipset? Any help ndiswrapper would be much appreciated. thanks, dogpark |

The reason I placed this post in the wrong forum is because I found another post re: WG511v2 & Ubuntu similar to the my question - which must have also been in the wrong forum. I do not know how to move this post to the 54Mbps forum but would appreciate if someone else would. That would avoid more confusion in the future should search & find my thread in the wrong forum - they might then also post to the wrong forum.

If your still looking for an answer, its rather simple. You need ME.
The Netgear wg511 PCM/CIA Adaptor, apart from being really bad, is simple to add into Ubuntu, the kernel had drivers added to it in 2006-2007 so it should install on its own , just have it in the laptop while installing Ubuntu, if this doesn't make it work. I have drivers that will, and i can give you step by step instructions on adding them, using ndiswrapper (easy) or by tar.gz file (harder) . Let me know if you need or desire either option. |

Hi Azoic,
Just saw your reply - using old email for responses here that I don't check very often. Will remedy that right now. Have already installed Lubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot - so far I like it. Uses very little RAM which is good since only have 512 Mg & it's fast. Picked up a Panda Mini Wifi because it was only $13.99 & Ubuntu friendly. Still $14 is $14 & perhaps I should have waited for someone like you to respond. & was kinda looking forward to playing with ndiswrapper. Would very much appreciate any wisdom you may be willing to share. Tweaking the driver with Ndiswrapper looks like another good Ubuntu learning opportunity. thanks, dogpark |
