Question installing JGS516 no direct connection

I am new to home networks although I had purchased this switch 4 years ago and now just finishing connecting it!. I have power, apparent activity b/t switch and computer (switch lights flashing green) and I can connect if I use my Cisco router connected to the switch. But if I connect directly to the switch, no internet and it does not come up using the network setup on Windows 7.

Is there a secret to having W7 find and recognize the new equipment?

Thanks.

You're going to need to explain how you have stuff connected - it sounds like you expect to be able to connect to the internet without the Cisco router - it doesn't work that way.

Since this is an unmanaged switch, it will not be sending any information for W7 to use. It passes what it is told to pass by other devices. Since it has no native network information, W7 will not be able to do any automatic setup without the router connected to the switch.

Yup, rookie mistake in not understanding 'the order of things'. I had the connction sequence wrong. I had modem->switch->router, when it should have been Modem->router->switch. I got some of it to work and then I had to switch to ATT U-verse in the middle of this.

I got my U-verse to work by itself, so now I'll try to add the switch and then test all of the connections in my house to see if I can get a connection. I used a tester and all of the twisted pairs tested green so I am on my way (to my next problem!)

Thanks.
