Default Connection drops when wireless is enabled WGR614v9

I spent a good while this evening trying to hook up my new WGR614 v9. Several hours later still could not get the amber internet light to go off and the connection to work. Internet and modem are working fine when hooked to my old wired linksys. Did everything by the book to install the new netgear, tried different setting changes here and there etc...Everything I had done in past router setups.

So I try one last thing and disable the wireless capability. It works PERFECTLY, but wired. SO now I am trying to find out why, when wireless is turned on, my modem starts going on and offline and the connection will not work.

The business:
I use Charter cable internet
no logon or pass required
Dynamic IP
Auto DNS
MAC address is good
Have not enabled any security yet and changed the wireless channel to 11 because I pick up another netgear signal. Nothing changes with channel on Auto.
SSID and WMM are enabled.
No wireless devides, cordless phones etc... near the router. It's sitting on top of the cpu
The modem is a fairly old, RCA DCM245R

Just to be crystal clear, wireless turned on- internet light is amber.
wireless off- internet light is green and wired connections are great.

Thanks for any help.

You say you see another Netgear wireless network so I assume from that that the other network is using the default SSID of ‘Netgear’. If your SSID is also still at the default then I suggest you change it. You didn’t say what channel the other network was on, was it 6? Wireless channels overlap in frequency, so Channel 11 can see channels down to channel 7 (with diminishing power). Channels 1, 6, and 11 do not overlap).

So I suggest changing the SSID if you have not done so, and try channel 1.

The router would probably be better away from the PC by at least a metre.

I did change the SSID previously. Could interference from another (weak) netgear signal cause the router to stop talking to the modem like it is doing?

It seems the problem was two fold.
I changed the channel to 1 and the amber light turned to green and all was well.
But the modem still went off.
Moved the modem away from the router and it started working perfectly.

Thanks!

There are a number of devices that can interfere with a wireless router, it is a radio transceiver after all, and a modem is one of those items as you seem to have found. I have seen several cases of this.
