For what it's worth, I uninstalled Netgear Genie from my system about a day after I installed it. I found it intrusive, and honestly I don't know what benefit it provides. If I need to use NG, I just go to my router's home page, and run it from there.

I use Eset 4 and it will not allow me to config the "IMCP" protocol.
Also check the firewall logs for:
12/27/2012 11:39:00 PM Detected covert channel exploit in ICMP packet 192.168.1.3 208.67.xxx.xxx ICMP
over and over then it's your firewall blocking Genie

In Eset 4 under firewall setup>
Personal firewall>
IDS and advanced options>
Packet inspection>
untick the box for:
Convert data in icmp protocol detection

i'd also like to add that i use Windows firewall unchanged so the ICMP packets will get checked by windows.
I had made a post before trying to fix the problem, where this did not fix the problem after a day came back. The final fix for me came when i reverted back to firmware version V1.0.0.82_8.0.71 with the firewall fix noted in the quote. Also i like the old GUI as it is much easier to read the right side help
