Default Difference between 2.4G and 5G band.

Hi there
A friend of mine asked me this question and I wasn't sure how to answer him.
During the firmware fiasco a while back, he finally managed to get the FW back to 1.0.0.12 on his router.
Doing so, he forgot to assign a password to the 5G band and it was visible in wifi discovery.

Since all his PC's were connected to the PASSWORD protected 2.4G band, was there any risk in having the 5G band unsecured?
As far I understand it, they are totally separate and unrelated.

Was there any risk to the the PC's on the 2.4G band.
I think all that could have happed it that someone was able to access the Internet from the 5G band?

Am I way off?
Thanks

They are not totally separate, they are simply the carrier frequency for the client devices that connect to the LAN, and a device operating over the 5GHz band will be able to communicate with devices on the 2.4GHz band, wired devices (Ethernet) and the Internet. The LAN is the common node for both bands.

Operating with an unsecured 5GHz access point leaves your network unsecured.
