Default NetGear XAV101

Hi I have recently been given a NetGear XAV101 and found the whole set up very easy, no issues and I have internet on my desktop thanks to it/them. However I seem to constantly have a red light (showing a slow connection) flashing at me every time I stream or play a game online. In fact it is always red but starts blinking every time the connection is used. Is there any way I can improve the connection speed of them or do I need to use a different outlet?
