Default weird dns response

I use comcast as my cable ISP yet currently have my router configured to use opendns' dns servers. primarily for parental control over a young male internet user. while testing using wired connections all seems to be working as expected.... If i enter an invalid domain i get my opendns error page . the weird part is when i try the same query from an iphone i get comcasts error page. I could understand it if an at&t error page was returned, but comcast. the iphone wifi is set up to resolve via the router. the only place that i can find a link to comcasts dns server is on the status page which i think is the router telling me what was returned from its dhcp request.

any thoughts

thanks I'll keep playing.

even after rebooting the phone, toggling wifi and renewing the phones lease I still get the comcast redirection page not open dns's. If i disable wifi i get a safari error "page cannot be found"

I figured it out....

it seems that just hitting "apply" when you change the DNS addresses under basic settings isnt enough. I had to power cycle the router.

now under router status it shows the open dns servers

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

and i get the open dns page on other devices

In most cases, hitting "apply" for any given setting in the web interface WILL reset the router.

That's one thing I hate about alot of consumer routers - making any change at all soft restarts the device.

I actually prefer the "bug" that you encountered. Enterprise-class devices generally require you to "write" or "commit" a change before it takes effect. This would allow you to configure devices in a way that is far less obtrusive to your users (and mine are demanding, gotta have that Facebook access).

I agree It is nice to set upp a change and later after hours log in to apply it so that the users are unaffected. But either way it works it should be consistant every time.
