Unhappy SPH2000 System is starting up message forever!

We have been using the phone for a couple of days with no problems. Then, all of a sudden the screens displays the message "System is starting up" and stays there forever! Have reset the base, have turned off my PC, have unplugged the ethernet cord, unplugged and plugged back the charger base, no success! Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Disconnect the power to the base station (you can leave the Ethernet cable plugged in) and provided your PC isn't heavily using your net connection, it can be left on.
  • Remove the batteries from the handset - leave them out for a few minutes and when you replace them, don't try to turn the handset on: just put it in the charger base and leave it for 15 minutes or so.
  • Plug in the power to the base station and leave it for a minute to settle down.
  • Take the handset out of the cradle and turn it on.
Hopefully it will now just start up, as if for the first time from new, and behave itself.
If you continue to get the same locked "System is starting up" message or if it initially works but displays this screen again - then I'd say that the system is faulty.

Excellent! I'm very pleased it's working again.
But I wouldn't fully trust it just yet - maybe after a few weeks without the same problem reappearing.

Best wishes from a currently very rainy London(ish).

I have this issue too. It appears to happen on my system if my DSL has frequent dropouts, or if I have a power failure and both my ADSL router/switch (also Netgear) and SPH200d box boots at the same time. The SPH200d boots quicker than the ADSL so sits in the "System is starting up" mode forever.

I am starting to get a little annoyed with the phone lately I really need to boot (power cycle the box, not the phone) the SPH200d a lot.

I still can not believe that more than a year on the market an NO firmware to resolve any issues???? I should have checked that before I purchased.

Logging faults with Netgear is a waste of time.

Hmm, that's interesting - and quite revealing. It seems the SPH200D doesn't keep checking to see if network connectivity appears: it just puts up the message, checks once and then goes into a coma if the network's not there...
This casts quite a different light on the OP's problem which now seems more likely to have been a DSL dropout.

Yes, and emphatically yes.
I'm still trying to get a meaningful response to stuff I'd reported on May 19th, and continue plugging away with several later issues too.

My wife have the same problem and I think that this post together with a thread
http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread...hlight=sph200d are very usefull threads for many of the sph200d/linksys 400 devices and should be placed in documentation / FAQ / troubleshooting. Many thans, those two threads helped me to reanimate 200 euros device which haven't worked for more then a month till I've returned and read those threads.

It happens to me for one week. I googled everywhere. I checked everything. Finally I checked the adpater plugged in the base station, which was always hot and replaced it. Everything works now.

I am running into the exact same issue whenever there is a power-failure. Unfortunately, I'm at a place where there's a couple of power-failures each day, and my netgear phone is hung with the "system is starting up" message for ever.

Is there a firmware update or a easier way to fix this issue. It's inconvenient to power cycle the phone each time, I have to use it.
