Default DG834N Log seems....empty?

I previously used a DG834G and the firewall log was always relatively full with DoS pings, port scans etc however the log on this new router seems not to log anything other than admin logins and NTP calls etc.

Has anyone got more info in their logs or is this a problem with the current firmware? (I'm using .06)

Thanks

Neil

What have you set up for logging?

I have the same problem!

I have all 4 options included, and Syslog set to Broadcast on LAN.

The logs currently read:
Current time: 2007-01-29 17:46:30

Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:23 - Administrator login successful - IP:192.168.0.6
Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:33 - Send out NTP request to 17.72.133.45
Fri, 2007-01-26 11:58:49 - Receive NTP Reply from 17.72.133.45

even after refreshing a couple of times.

Its still exactly the same - with the exception of the current time:

Current time: 2007-01-31 15:09:19

Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:23 - Administrator login successful - IP:192.168.0.6
Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:33 - Send out NTP request to 17.72.133.45
Fri, 2007-01-26 11:58:49 - Receive NTP Reply from 17.72.133.45

Any ideas?

Incidentally, the router has Firmware Version V1.01.06

Perhaps you are not being attacked, these things tend to go in phases.

Try testing using something like ShieldsUp (google for it), it 'attacks' your address, and should trigger a response.

Just tried that -1056 port scan, all stealth. Nothing shows in the logs - even after refreshing a few times.

I just had to install a new DG834N this morning (after my DG834GT went up in smoke (literally) last night).

Syslog messages were being recieved for <1min, and then it stops.

I used the KiwiSysGen utility to verify messages are being received by the syslog process, and then performed a simulated DoS attack on my IP from an external server.
This was with 1.01.03 and 1.01.06 FW versions, so there is something defintely wrong with both loads.

I'll telnet into the box later on (when I remember how to do it and verify that the syslog process on the router has died).

This sounds like an old old problem that existed on the GT version many moons ago.
Glad to see they have some great config management at Netgear.

I'll post back my findings.

Angry Re: DG834N Log seems....empty?

For instructions on how to telnet to your DG834N, here is a post on my site:

http://www.yaps4u.net/mt_archives/20...ar_dg834gt.php

From what I can tell, the syslog process is dying.
Can't find any error messages in the logs, but I'll dig deeper.

Last time I had this problem it took Netgear an age to admit there was a problem.
(This time I've downloaded the source code, and I'll send them the line in the code if I have to).

Don't you just love support...

Submitted a new ticket and gave them the location of the logs I took, and their response was what is 'syslog' and 'which error log was I referring to'.

I shouldn't laugh...
