Default Intermittent connection issues

Howdy -

I am running a Dell Dimension 4500 with Windows XP SP3 and have installed the WPN311 card somewhat successfully. It attempts to connect but frequently stalls at "acquiring network address." If I run through several rounds of disable/enable in the network connections window, I can usually get it to connect to the router. I'm connected right now, for example.

The signal strength never goes below about 80% (according to the Netgear SmartWizard), but it will occasionally drop the connection (such as when it goes into sleep mode) and then tell me that connection is weak or limited. After a few rounds of disable/enable, I can usually get it to reconnect. Sometimes it seems like a restart helps, but it is not required.

Router is set to WPA2-PSK and typically works fine once connection is established. I have another laptop that works fine and reconnects instantly whenever it needs to, so the problem doesn't seem to have anything to do with the router.

What else do I need to check?

Yes, both are running SP3.

The router admin does not want to downgrade the encryption - and why should they? Isn't this card supposed to support the WPA2 standard?

I would try PC with XP SP2 if that works better.

WEP are hackable so that is one reason. also issue could be the router you are using could be not compatible with it

"also issue could be the router you are using could be not compatible with it"

Is it possible that the card could be partially compatible (?) such that it doesn't connect correctly on the first try, but that I can usually get it to connect after a few rounds of enabling/disabling it?

I'll have to get back to you about the router - it's in a locked closet.

In the meantime, I'd like to keep checking other issues. Any problems with Driver Version 4.1.2.150, published 7/5/2006? Is there a later version I should try to download?

I also have problems with Netgear Smart Wizard crashing - although it doesn't seem to impact my connection once it has been made. The error is "NetgearCUv2 MFC Application has encountered an error and needs to close." Should I copy the error log and post it to the forum next time it crashes?

Thanks.

I suppose another way to phrase my question - what would cause the adapter to have trouble making the initial connection but would not prevent it from working satisfactorily once the connection had been made?
