Question New Compaq (HP) Laptop cannot connect to WiFi Network

I have recently purchased a Compaq Presario CQ61 Notebook PC through work, I connected to my office WiFi network without issue but when I brought it home I could not connect to my home wireless network although the SSID could be seen with excellent signal strength - Error message after diagnosing problem is Wireless association failed because Windows did not receive any response from the wireless router or access point.
After reading through threads on this forum I have still been unable to connect to my network and am looking for some assistance. I recently had a similar problem with an LG laptop running Windows Vista but it somehow rectified itself (????). Below are the details of my network hardware:
  • Compaq Presario CQ61 Laptop
  • OS - Windows Vista Home Premium SP1
  • Wireless Adapter - Atheros AR5007 802.11 b/g WiFi Adapter
  • Router - WPN824v2
I should add I can connect to the network via ethernet and my Desktop PC is connected to wireless network using Netgear adapter running XP SP3.

Finally when I ran the "HP Wireless Network Assistant" while connected via ethernet cable it came up with "Router Not Supported" message. I do not want to purchase a new router as this one works with every other laptop/PC/Wii/iPhone etc that I am using.

What wireless security are you using on your home network?

MAC address control?

Cool Re: New Compaq (HP) Laptop cannot connect to WiFi Network

I have tried the following to rectify the issue:

Reset/restart Router (numerous times)
Set Router to b&g Channel 1
using WEP security (tried with No Security)
unchecked "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" in Adapter Properties
'Allowed' laptop MAC Address
Set Fixed IP address in Router settings
Left TCP/IPv4 as obtain IP address Automatically on laptop

Interestingly after posting this help request last night the laptop, while connected to network via ethernet, connected to an "unknown network" with limited connectivity. Not sure if this was my network but there were no other networks found when I searched...

Cheers

Have you changed the SSID from the default ‘Netgear’, if not do so?

Thanks for the responses, I should have mentioned SSID was changed from default when network was first established.
I will try re-entering MAC address into router and disabling laptop firewall before restarting both...

If you are using any form of wireless encryption then MAC filtering is pointless, I suggest you disable it. Also is there any reason why you are using WEP and not WPA or WPA2?

Thanks for everyone's help - simply disabling the "Wireless Card Access List- Access Control" fixed the issue once I re-entered the WEP key.

Mars-Mug, you asked why I use WEP not WPA or WPA2. The only reason being WEP was first on the list, I thought it was sufficient with Access Control also, what is the most secure option here? is it wise to select WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] option?

Thanks again to all advice in fixing main issue.

WPA (or better still WPA2) is significantly more secure than WEP, but in both cases the wireless sniffing software used by network hackers reveals the SSID and the MAC addresses of wireless clients that are trying to connect. Therefore the hacker knows what MAC addresses to use before even cracking the network code. MAC address filtering often causes problems and in my opinion adds nothing to security if encryption is used.

In the vast majority of cases even WEP is fine especially if you change the key regularly, use a strong key, and don’t live near hackers.
