Default DG834GT upgrade failure

Hi all

I have had this router supplied by Sky Broadband for 3 years. It works fine but I have never been able to upgrade the firmware, despite following the proper procedure. This has happened with every upgrade file released by Netgear since December 07. The message I get is

Upgrade file is not the correct type or version for this device.
Upgrade failed.

Please obtain the correct file and try again.

It currently runs Firmware version 1.03.87 which I presume is 2007 or earlier.
Like I say it works fine but I would like to see what improvements a firmware upgrade could bring - my Nokia 96 won't connect to the Wifi for example.

The downloaded files from Netgear have always been in image format (.img)

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Helen

Hi Sir,

The latest firmware from the Netgear's website is version 1.03.22. It appears that the firmware version 1.03.87 is a firmware supplied(locked) by Sky Broadband. Here is the link for the firmware versions for the DG834GT:

http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2328

Note: Make sure Show all versions is checked.

By locked do you mean I can't unlock it? Thanks for the link but I have visited that page many times and downloaded all the upgrages, with no success

Hi HelBel65,

Basically you are using a 3rd party software, the firmware developed by your ISP. You can verify with them if you can unlock and use the official firmware released by Netgear or update the firmware.

This has been covered several times before.

The Sky DG834GT uses custom firmware which includes user name. If you are still using Sky it is probably better not to reflash it with Netgear retail firmware because it against terms of contract -- and will prevent you receiving on-line automatic updates to the Sky firmware.

If you plan to use the router with another provider, you can wipe the Sky code using the Netgear DG834 utility intended to clear corrupted firmware. You are then able to update to the latest Netgear release.

The experts on all this are to be found on the independent www.skyuser.co.uk which has tutorials.
