Default What does the Port Scan Detection feature do?

Hi there

My CVG824G router has a feature called "Port Scan Detection" in its settings, but what does this do exactly? The description says "When Port Scan Detection is enabled, the cable gateway has the ability to respond to Internet based port scans". This can mean two different things to my mind though... Either it responds by blocking the port scanner, or it responds by answering the scanner.

Should this feature be left on or off? Can anyone clarify?

Thanks a lot =)

Great, so I guess I'll leave it on then, thanks!

Can you tell me how this one differs from the other firewall feature in the router that performs Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and protects against Denial of Service (DoS) attacks?

You will not find both option in router. But both does the same function

Hm, they can both be checked in the interface though... Here's a copy and paste:

"When Firewall Features are enabled, the gateway will perform Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and protect against Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.

When IPSec Pass-Through is enabled, IPSec traffic will be forwarded. When it is disabled, this traffic will be blocked.

When PPTP Pass-Through is enabled, PPTP traffic will be forwarded. When it is disabled, this traffic will be blocked.

When Multicast is enabled, the cable gateway has the ability to pass multicasting streams through the firewall.

When Port Scan Detection is enabled, the cable gateway has the ability to respond to Internet based port scans.

When IP Flood Detection is enabled, the cable gateway has the ability to block malicious devices that are attempting to flood devices."

I guess I'm back to being pretty confused!
