I've recently upgraded from a netgear 11b solution to the above 54mb setup. I've also changed from wep to wpa encrytion. The router is running firmware 4.01.20 (the latest) and the WG111v2 driver version is 5.1254.1120.2006 with a SWU version of 2.0.1.3. I run XP SP2.
I've disabled the WZC service as per the recommendations. I can see the AP via the networks tab on channel 11 witha 75% signal. I configure the connection save and apply it with the correct parameters and it connects. It then drops. It then reconnects. Then it drops. Then it reconnects. Then it drops..... get the picture. I have a laptop using built in wireless and have no problems at all. The desktop PC with USB adapter however just constantly connects and disconnets. Now, barring in mind I'm a senior network guy for a global corp, i'm at my wits end. Is it just that it doesn't work?! What am i missing? Why won't it hold the connection? There's occasionally another access point appears (a neighnour) but it's not like i'm surrounded by hundreds of APs competing for the same channel. The connection drops and restablishes every few seconds, not long enough to do anything. I am going to bring my old netgear 11b router on line, reconfigure with wep and see if it stablisies. Any thoughts anyone? I'm at my wits end. Cheers, Richard |

OK, well please don’t take this as patronising questions, but have you changed the default SSID, and have you tried changing channels at all?

Don't worry, there's no such thing as a stupid question. I've changed the default SSID to something completely unique, I've also stopped it broadcasting. I did try changing the channels, but I wasn't able to connect at all if it wasn't using channel 11.
I'm flumoxed! |

I can’t see a reason why you would have to use channel 11 only?
If you have upgraded the router firmware it is often necessary to factory reset the thing, and manually re-enter any settings. |

I've got my hands on another WG111v2 USB adaptor and the connection was stable for a time (hours) and all of a sudden it too has started disconnecting/reconnecting every few seconds. I've also changed the channel to 8, and the workstation picks up the new channel - still connecting and disconnecting. any other ideas?

You could download Netstumbler and use this to do some basic monitoring;
www.netstumbler.com/downloads/ It's free and quite easy to use. |

I am having the exact same problem.
I recently bought a WGR614 router and a WG511v2 card for my laptop. I am an experienced IT professional so I know what I am doing. I set the router up with no problems, but after installing the card in the laptop, it continually scanned, then seemed to connect but would then re-scan and wouldn't establish a connection at all. I had the laptop about 2 feet from the router and the signal was approx 80%. I had WPA enabled, so I removed it to no security. Then the laptop connected straight away! The WPA key was nearly 60 characters long, so I tried making it shorter, it then connected. All was well, until today, I was using the laptop downstairs (the router is upstairs) it first connected okay, then after about 15 minutes the same thing happened and I couldn't get a connection (the signal was showing a strong level though) I found that updating the WPA key from the router login settings (using the same key) would work for a while. I don't know why this should work. I even tried installing the latest drivers for the WG511v2, this made no difference. I'm pleased that I'm not the only person with this problem, but I would like to know what is causing it. It seems to be something to do with the WPA but what I don't know. |

The constant connect/disconnect issue has emerged with a customised version of the Netgear DG834GT (supplied by Sky Broadband in the UK). The solution seems to be to turn off UPnP.

Thanks fihart, but I have UPnP turned off.
At the moment it is working, I will have to see how it goes. |
