Thank you all, especially mastershake for all the great info on here. I found this site after searching for the 37av after seeing it at Walmart the other day (with a "Exclusively at Walmart!" sticker on the package, no less). I've read through all 42 pages and there is a TON of useful stuff on here, but I notice the conversation tapered off a while ago, as Netgear was apparently flipping a coin to decide is you'd get a v1 or v2 in the box.

Now on Netgear's page for the 3700, I see there is a v3 listed. Has anyone been able to compare this to the v1 and v2 to see how they do? I see the 37av also has a v2, and was wondering if the 37av was still the same hardware as the 3700 or if they had diverged the lines at all.

I'm on the eve of doing a major wiring project in my house, to put Gigabit ethernet in every room, using a combination of one of the 37xx routers and a few Gb switches. Any advice on whether or not the 3700 v1 was still the better device, or if the v3 or 37av v2 had taken the lead?

I'm amazed at how many people after 42 pages are still posting outrage that they bought a 37av and got a 3700 in the box and are all confused. RTFT, and it makes sense. Kudos to Mars Mug and mastershake for not going completely crazy the umpteenth time someone said "I bought a 37av and Netgear put a 3700 in the box how dare they burn them burn them!"

You will not get a version 3 in a WNDR37AV package box. All you have to do is look on the side of the package for the contents. It if says "v2" next to the router model, you are getting a WNDR3700v2 inside. If it just has the model like "WNDR37AV" or "WNDR3700" you are getting the orignal release (aka v1) model.

The reason you will not see a version 3 WNDR3700 in the WNDR37AV marketed series is they lack the video streaming algorithms that can be enabled on the v1 &v2 as they are Atheros chipped units. The WNDR3700v3 is crap. It is a unit with a "neutered" WNDR4000 board inside, which is Broadcom based chipped.

The WNDR37AV is just a repackaging of WNDR3700 v1 or v2 units. It was a marketing thing for Netgear to have displays in retailers in the home video & audio departments.

The WNDR3700v3 has weaker signal on the 2.4Ghz band than the WNDR3700v1, WNDR3700v2, WNDRMAC & WNDR3800. The power amps on the WNDR3700v3 & WNDR4000 are not as good.

I picked up two WNDRAVv2 (aka WNDR3700v2) at Best Buy last week on clearance for $89 in the home theater department.
