I have had this router since august 2010. I have had this same problem with the router hanging. I currently have version 3.0.7-8 of the firmware. It goes down about 3 times a week but reboots itself and takes about 3 minutes to come back up.

I am still hoping for a fix.

I finally got frustrated enough with my FVS318G to google about this hanging issue. I was hoping to read this thread and find a solution at the end! ARGH! I'm surprised to see how many months people have complained with no resolution. I gave up on the Linksys equipment I had and bought Netgear hoping it was beater. I found the features better, but if it isn't reliable it just doesn't matter what the features are.

I wish I could return mine -- I've had it too long.

In general, I try to stay up to date on my firmware. this time, i paid the price. using the latest & greatest prevented me from creating a service on port 81. I called support and they had me down grade from 3.0.6-16 to 3.0.5-24. While this fixed my issue (allowing me to create services with ports below 1024) it did create for me a new issue... once a day and it seems to be towards the night hours my FW locks up. it stops giving out addresses, and prevents internet access and I am un able to connect to it via the mgmt port.

Now, i just read the secret post in the posts above and see that between some firmware up/down grades you MUST perform a factory default rest and you MUST NOT restore a backup config (so, set it up by hand again). if you don’t follow this, "unexpected results/performance are expected".

I’m going to give it a try to see how it works once i find out a stable firmware version that allows me to create services below port 1024. Now, why the tech on the other day didn’t inform me of these steps is beyond me. i just hope it works. i have grown fond of the net gear products compared to others on the market and hope that these devices work as expected.

For some reason they disabled the ability to create a service below 1024 on version 3.0.6-16 most likely to try to reduce conflict within the router in an attempt to resolve the hanging issues. The beta firmware allow you to create services below 1024. There are multiple versions of the firmware based on the exact issue you are having. I would recommend calling support, that is the only way to obtain the beta firmware.

My suspicion is that if you continue to use that older firmware you are going to continue to have lockup problems. Not to say you wont with the beta firmware, I certainly still am, the advantage is the router now reboots itself automatically.

I am still waiting on a fix for this. Frustrating to say the least.

Would be nice if another manufacturer would make a router with 8 gigabit ports on it.

I cant believe that Netgear would allow this to continue. We purchased our FVS318G about 3 months ago and have had nothing but trouble. Same situation. It locks up every few days. Regardless of bandwidth. I even did an RMA with Netgear and got a new FW the next day. But no luck. I don't even know if i should bother calling support for a beta release or just wait for a new firm ware. I'm going to try the new firmware. 3.0.7-22 currently using 3.0.6-16http://forum1.netgear.com/images/smilies/frown.gif hopefully this resolves the issue. I installed a back up Netgear RP614 in the mean time. I like Netgear products. I hope they resolve this issue soon. I run a MS exchange server at my company and the FW is an integral part of our network. I will post again if the new firmware solves the issue.

Why would a router/firewall etc EVER drop connection to anything??? WTF, is it 1978 or something? I have never had an issue with a device dropping users, losing wan or anything even close. AND, if there was a prob it was a single device that was swapped out and replaced. WHEN THE HELL are you netgear dudes gonna fix this FRIGGIN device?? Im using .22 firmware and now the POS basically hangs then reboots itself... WTF WTF WTF?? So VOIP is not usable and niether is any VPN usage since the hang kills those items mid stream.... I AM SO FRIGGIN PISSED right now i can't contain myself.

I bought 3 of these things for 3 different offices and now i am taking some major PHUCCCKINGGG heat due to this mother effer not working...

FIX YOUR FRIGGIN HARDWARE RIGHT FRIGGIN NOW YOU MFAH

Ok so I've been using the 3.0.7-22. it definitely still hangs. Every time it hangs it requires a reset. When I update the devices IP it hangs. Factory reset update IP hangs repeat. Sometimes it takes as many as three times before the new IP or LAN/WAN rules are in the devices. Even when I do a restore to a back up of all the LAN/WAN rules in our network it will still hang. I have followed all the instructions from this forum on how to update the firmware properly. And still..... HANGS!!!!! I do agree that this firmware is slightly more stable.
When it is up it will be several days before it hangs. But still.... I am so pissed about this. I need a device to be reliable. We purchased the device and I want a different model. I'm sick and tired of having to deal with this firewall. I want a replacement. We purchased it fair and square and the device just does not work as advertised. I can no longer afford to have downtime on our network or constantly babysit this POS. FIX YOUR PRODUCTS!!!!
