You need to make sure that both routers are not running DHCP.
In most circumstances you can upgrade from one firmware to the next. It's only been required twice in 7 years, so it's not frequent. The first time was moving from Netgear firmware writers to a third party. The other was over a year ago when there was a major overhaul. When this process is recommended, do not reload a saved config after the upgrade. All you do is reload the mismatched information, and the problems that go with it.
