Thanks for the prompt reply.
But you should know that the response just made my eyes glaze over. I can put physical things like plugs into the right places and follow a windows setup wizard - but this is waaaay beyond me. Can you tell me what do to and where to do this configuration thing? (presume I've no clue here) |

Q1 - Who set the printer up originally?
Q2 - Have you tried HP support? There's a very strong probability that the subnet has changed as JM is suggesting - and there are two ways to fix it - the first and perhaps correct way, being to change the printer to match the new router, and the second being to configure the new router to use the same subnet as the old router (if you know what it is). HP should have a JetDirect manager utility that can locate the printer and assist with reconfiguring it.

I set it up the previous time on the old router. But I really don't know that much about networking and routers. I'm basically a tinkerer. Took me a few tries, trying different things and it finally worked. I couldn't tell what what I actually did the previous time. Pretty much all I know is that it worked.
My sense is that its more of having some basic idea how to set this darn thing up. I admit up front, this is something I really don't know much about. Given that the printer worked with the previous router, I don't think the problem is there. I've already spent over 10 hrs trying things. But someone who knows how to set up this router would probably have it done in short order. I did try to change the settings on the printer to the ip number of the new router. Didn't work. Perhaps there is something else? What I keep coming back to is that the router doesn't recognize or otherwise can't find the printer. If I understand any of this, that should mean that something needs to be set up (is that what you mean by configure?) on the router. And that is beyond what I know. But I can follow basic directions setting these things up. If you can tell me what to do in basic english, I should be able to do it. |

if prior LAN subnet was ex. 192.168.0.x and new one is ex. 192.168.1.x then possible printer has not using a new LAN subnet. usually this is printer setting which is not correctly for new router. I would print reports on printer, HP should have report>network settings and see what is the HP currently setup at

I can see and set things in the printer.
But where do I get the numbers from? The printer is an HP4200 Laserjet. The available settings are ip address subnet mask default gateway syslog server note: on the router the green light is on for the input for the printer - if I turn off the printer the light goes out - don't know if this is relevant or not |
