Default install of PC Card (WG511 v2) causes Windows startup problem

Hello,

yesterday i installed the Netgear PC Card (WG511 v2) for my neice and was delighted to be able to use the internet straightaway. Then I decided to reboot to see if it was indeed working okay for her in the future. But the installation has created a password for windows log on, and we now cannot boot the laptop! She never had a password to boot before. Her name comes up (she is the sole user) and since we do not know the new mystery password, we cannot boot. And when we choose shutdown it goes into an endless cycle of re-booting and being blocked by the above password problem. Can you help please, asap?! Thank you, L J

(It is a Toshiba Satelite pro A60 running Win XP sp2 with sotware update running.)

Hi Louisxv11 and welcome to the Forum.

Have you tried no password? If that doesn't work, I would try talking to Toshiba to find out what the administrator password is. Once you are able to login to the laptop use the XP Fix Logon software available Here.

Moving to Super-G (108 Mbps) & 802.11g (54 Mbps) Adapters.

yes, I have tried entering no password but that just starts the rebooting loop I mentioned. since there was never a password in use before I don't see how Toshiba are going to be able to help me. Since the Netgear installation was what created this crisis I am hoping to get help from them. So if you have other suggestions, fire away! Louis J

When Toshiba factory installs XP they put in an Administrator account and password. You should be able to get this info from Toshiba and be able to login with that account. Then you can use the program that I mentioned to get the normal XP login screen back.

Hi again,

I have just got it to boot! I clicked to go ahead without entering any password and it work this time. Now I want to creat a new user to have another way of getting going. I have just clicked to change the way users logon and the following comes up.
" A recently installed program has disabled the welcome screen and Fast User Switching. to restore these features, you must uninstall this program. the folowing filename might help you identify the program that made this change MrvGINA.dll"
Can you tell me if this belongs to the netgear PC Card adapter install routine?

thank you, L J

Download and run the XP Fix Logon Program available Here. This will restore the normal Windows XP logon and fast user switching.

The NETGEAR installer did install MrvGINA.dll to allow for domain login on secure networks. The default GINA (Graphical Interface for Network Authentication) is MSGINA.dll. NETGEAR had to modify this file to allow for encrypted wireless networks to authenticate before windows logon to support domains. The program that I have told you about will restore the GINA back to default.

Hi,
I installed the file that you referred me to and it said that the reference to the dll I mentioned above should be changed to another dll. I did so and we seem to be up and running again. However, can you please tell this 5/8 end-user if the netgear installation did in fact place that problem file - or is Netgear not to blame? thanks, LJ
