Comparing the "New Features & Bug Fixes:" apparently, compared to 1.0.14.98 not a single new feature or bug fix was included in 1.0.16.98. It took Netgear more than a month just to remove "IPTV function for Russians" from their 1.0.14.98. They apparently added nothing and fixed nothing.

I found 1.0.14.98 to be unreliable (especially in AP mode but also in normal mode as an AP) and did not see much (any?) difference in the fixes that were listed for 16.98. At this point, I am just not going to even spend the time trying this latest version. For all of you who try it, I truly hope that it works well!

I have been very happy with 1.0.7.98 (note: as an AP only - I've been very happy with its performance/range/stability as an AP and realize that any of the other features are nothing that I've found to work with consistency). 7.98 and as using this only as an AP is my recommendation for the best (and only) use of this device - stick with that and you'll be happy.

@knightrider2000:

I strongly disagree.

I have tried many routers (including e4200, e3000, rt-n56u...so called top of the line home routers). In comparison to these leading products, I would have to say that the WNDR3700 has relatively few bugs.

In fact, it is hard to find a reliable router such as this one (especially running on the last two builds) that has as many WORKING functions like IPv6, Media Server, USB with EXT3 support, great wireless performance, respectable WAN/LAN LAN/WAN throughput.

Some comparisons:

E4200 >>> No IPV6. Broken Twonky media server (latest build), no ext3 support, no bandwidth monitor. No indicator lights. 480 MHz chip.

RT-n56 >> no guest access. No IPv6. Erratic 2.4 radio (at least based on my testing). Fails port scan test.

I have only had it running for 8 hours but no problems so far.
Any improvement with the routers wireless range?

WNDR3700 v1
Flashed from 1.0.7.98 after resetting to factory from the GUI and removing the USB ext3 formatted HDD I have attached.
Re-did my rules and set-up:
2 wireless 2.4GHz
1 LAN
1 networked USB HDD

Ran the batch file to disable the traffic meter via telnet and set up port forwarding, IP assignment rules and QoS.

Very good so far but so was 1.0.7.98.
I see a few new features such as a more flexible port forwarding option but what I'm pleased about is that Netgear are further developing the firmware and supporting it.
My router has now been ultra reliable even with my ext3 formatted USB drive attached since I put on 1.0.7.98.
Looking back. I am very happy with this router and believe I made a wise choice!

No issues as a result of the new firmware...

I didn't notice any difference. The wireless range has always been pretty good with my 3700.

I disagree that the WNDR3700 should only be used as a AP. It's about how you configure and use this router. I've been using my WNDR3700v1 with v1.0.7.98 firmware as a full blown, multi-attached device router without any issues. This includes attached devices working flawlessly.

For me, I had no reason at the time to upgrade to v1.0.14.98 firmware. And, while subject to change without notice; with the release of v1.0.16.98 firmware, with the apparently only difference being that a Russian feature was removed, I doubt I'll upgrade to the v1.0.16.98 firmware for the same reason.

Current uptime on the router is 60:12:22:06 and it would have been longer if the power failure we had two months ago would have been shorter than the UPS allowed.

I too have connection problems with 1.0.16.98 (and 1.0.14.98 also). Its just like the version previous to 1.0.7.98, which was pulled from the website - 1.0.4.98 was it? It too had massive connection problems. Sometimes random web connections will simply time out, but you might turn right around and it will suddenly work. I encountered the problem with 2 different browsers, and also with 2 anti-malware programs with auto-update functionality. It also happened trying to connect to Steam, so its definitely the router. Going back to 1.0.7.98 gives no problems whatsoever... been running it since it came out and it has been the best firmware to date, easily. Note that I tried erasing the settings on the router status page, and set up everything manually with 1.0.16.98, but still had the connection problems.

Has anyone gotten this firmware version (or previous V1.0.14.98) to work in this arrangement?

ReadyNAS Duo with DLNA serving media content---WNDR3700v1 ---Xbox 360
All wired

I can see/play the ReadyNAS with V1.0.7.98 fw perfectly. But when I use either V1.0.14.98 or V1.0.16.98...same settings...it doesnt work, I cant see the ReadyNAS on the Xbox.

When I go back to V1.0.7.98, it works perfectly. Any ideas? I have tweaked/tried every different setting I can think of...no deal.

Sir, could you please tell me what model and size hard drive you are using on your USB port? I have one connected to mine, and I suspect that is the cause of all my lockups and freezes every week or so. I'm at the point where I will try this new firmware to see if the crashes stop, then I'll try the OpenWRT firmware, and if none of that works, I'll just remove the USB hard drive and go back to my old slow NAS until I get a better one. Sigh. Frustrating.
