I'm not sure to be honest. I believe you should use the ethernet mac address in either situation. Try that. If it doesn't work then use the mac address of the wifi card which you can also get from the Network preference pane.

From my understanding, even if the network backups will be done using a different port (e.g. AirPort: usually “en1″) the system will use the address of en0 as part of the system identifier.

regulus6633:

Ignore that last post. I did all the steps, but the backup failed. Every thing seemed to work well, at least I got no errors while in the terminal. Im wondering about step 7. I matched my name the way you said, but should there be some thing after Volume (specific to my computer) on the code line "sudo tmutil setdestination -p /Volumes/Backup\ of\ MacBook\ Pro"

Turns out they are the same, so that is one hurdle down.

Could it be an issue as to where the backup is mounted?

OK actually I think it is step #6. How do I mount the sparsebundle to my computers?

$ open YOUR_SPARSEBUNDLE_NAME.sparsebundle

Or, if I'm reading it properly you could open TM in System Preferences and selected the image you just made (Select Disk). Then set the type of backup when your there (Options).

The method he's using is after making a sparsebundle and sizing is to mount (open), then copy your MBP contents.

Well, maybe I have a deeper issue. The image I made dosent show up in the TM preferences. AHHHHHHHHH, I wish I understood this stuff better. thanks for all the info, it would be great if an update was made for us idiots.

Step 5 would be an important step to tell TM to look at a non HSF drive.

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

I understand your frustration, we can only hope they will complete this update soon.
