Default Connect 2 x WNR3500

I am moving int a very large house. The plan is for my office to be on the 2nd floor at 1 end of the house. I will have the Cable Modem and Wireless Router there. I have an ethernet cable ran from there to my master bedroom which is on the first floor in its on wing at the other end of the house. I want to make sure I have wireless coverage throughout the house. My first plan was to have the following setup.

Cable modem -> WNR3500 WAN Port -> WNR3500 LAN Port -> WN802T Wireless Access Point.

I am having trouble justifying the cost of the WN802T.

I am curious if the following setup would work.

modem -> WNR3500 WAN Port -> WNR3500 LAN Port -> 2nd WNR3500 WAN Port

So I would purchase 2 WNR3500. Use the 2nd one to extend the wireless coverage into the Master Bedroom wing. As a bonus it would also give me some additional LAN ports in that wing if needed in the future. I would of course disable DHCP on the 2nd router. Just wondering if you folks think this will work or am I missing something. Also does the cable from the LAN port on the main router to the WAN port on the 2nd router need to be a crossover cable?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I do not see any reason why that would not work, I would be interested in any other post answers to the contrary, and I don't think you will need a crossover.

OK, I have the 2 routers and have started the setup and I am running into 1 problem. Router 2 cannot connect to the internet. When I go into Router Upgrade, Check for new version, I get a message that the router is not connected to the internet. I have my macbook pro connected to port 2 on Router 2 (Switch Router) and it connects to the internet fine. I have my thinkpad connected to port 2 on Router 1 (Internet Router) and it connects to the internet fine. I am able to ping Router 1 from my thinkpad and connect to the web interface. It appears that everything is working as expected except that Router 2 cannot connect to the internet to check for upgrades. Below are the details of my setup. Do you guys have any ideas of something to look for.

I have Router 1 (Internet Router) connected to the Cable Modem.

Router 1 WAN
WAN IP 70.178.5.53
Subneet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 70.178.5.1

Router 1 LAN
IP 192.168.7.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0

Local DNS 0.0.0.0

Router 2 (Switch Router) Lan Port 1 connected to Router 1 Lan Port 1

Router 2 LAN Setup

this will NOT work on 2nd router that is setup as AP. Upgrade check is design to use internet port so any firmware check must be done manually from support.netgear.com

your other choice is to temporarily:
1. shut down & disconnect router #1 from modem
2. re-set & configure router #2 as your base.
3. run "upgrade..."
4. load "backup configuration" to router #2
5. power up #1 & reconnect as before

a hassle I know.

you don't have to do that.. unplug the LAN to LAN connect with the 2 devices and use internet port of the 2nd router to the lan port of the main router then you will abel to find the firmware temporary .

better to manually download the firmware and upload
