Talking WNDR3700v3

Advanced tab on the Wndr3700v3 Wireless settings the preamable mode should have auto option on the 2.4 and 5ghz it already has long and short it should have auto on both bands so the router can decide on it's own what preamable to use for the device connected to the router.

There should be an optimize for gaming option in the qos tab in all newer netgear routers that would be a nice addition to the firmware.

WNDR3700v3 needs a firmware update to fix wireless throughput being slow only shows 130mbps but is set for 300mbps on 2.4ghz and 5ghz and our wireless cards support 300mbps on 2.4 and 5ghz hopefully this will be fixed if it's a firmware issue.

In terms of the preable mode, the AUTO option is not a doable thing for Broadcom-based Netgear routers. You will have to look into an Atheros chipped model.

The WNDR3700v3 is a "neutered" WNDR4000 board inside the glossy black case. The lower link rate connection issue you mentioned still exists in the WNDR4000 latest firmware release for the 2.4Ghz band. Support has been well aware of it for almost a year now. The same issue does also occur with the WNDR4500. This is an issue that exists on most dual-band Broadcom-based Netgear routers (WNDR4000, WNDR4500, WNDR3700v3, WNDR3400, etc). I dont know if it is a chipset related issue or just crappy firmware coding by Netgear or both.

If you can, you are better off returning the WNDR3700v3 and purchase the WNDR37AV which retails for the same price. It is hard to find in retail stores. I order my units from www.staples.com. You will get a WNDR3700v2 within the WNDR37AV box, which you will not have the link rate issue with. Plus you will get better signal on 2.4Ghz frequency due to better power amps. In addition you will get a great video streaming algorithm option for the 5Ghz radio. If you want to spend a few extra dollars go for the WNDRMAC which has all this plus up's the router RAM from 64MB to 128MB. The WNDR3800 is the same price as the WNDRMAC, but has some firmware issues that affect throughput speed (.25 beta) and signal drops (.24 & below) at times.

It should be a doable thing to have auto preamable on Broadcom to make them competive with Atheros I've had better luck with Broadcom hardware over Atheros anyways had two WNDR3700v2 that crapped out on me with in the first couple of hours I had them the wireless cards gave out and stop broadcasting there signal or no signal at all thats why I went with the version three and have had it for 3 months now no problems what so ever
