I wasn't aware you had to forward any port, either plug it in hardwired or connect wireless.

You don't have to forward the port. Its just that my dl speed is realllly slow when you dl on the PlayStation network when am on wireless and it never been a problem. When i was at my dads apartment with wireless router wdr3700. so there is something that blocking it. it giving my head in. it could be i need to put the playstation on static ip. but im not sure. If i Can dó that when i Got a dymatistic ip.

most console do need port forwarding if uPnP do not help the console.

static IP will no difference but in order to sue port fording you will need to use static IP.

making console just static iP will do nothing ..

To use port forwarding you MUST have static IP or use address reservation under LAN setup(router interface) and push desire IP based on the mac address of network of the PC you are using
