Hello,
I'm having a problem with the router, either its internal firewall or some sort of flood protection. When I attempt to use Steam to browse counter-strike servers, it appears that the sudden influx of data is viewed as an attack, and the router drops connection. Does anyone know how I might disable this flood protection (or the firewall if its causing this problem), or some way around the issue? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. |

You could try disabling SPI in the router WAN Setup page, it is also possible that you may need to adjust the MTU.

Typically the MTU would be reduced, down to 1400 is not uncommon. But in the link I gave is a link to DrTCP where there is an online measurement tool which will suggest an optimum MTU and take away the guess work.
Did SPI make no difference? |

Having the same issue here on a WGR614v7 with latest firmware. when attempting to play Team Fortress 2 (and CS:S... happens with ALL steam based games). Tried above methods to alleviate the problem. nothing worked. when the PC (Windows Vista Business) is connected directly to the cable modem (not behind the router) I have no issues browsing the server list and performing multiple refreshes and repopulating the server lists so its definitely a router/firmware issue. at any given time there are a maximum of 4 devices connected to the router, 2 wired desktops (mine with Steam installed and one more that only does IM and web, and 2 wireless laptops doing the same as the other wired desktop)
Tried disabling SPI, set NAT filtering to OPEN. ensured correct steam required ports are forwarded. also tried fully resetting the router to factory defaults (hard reset followed by soft reset) then reconfiguring the router (not using a backed up config file) and still no luck. If ive just opened steam i can usually get 1 good list refresh before i start getting server not responding info and then web sites wont load. If i wait a minute or so after closing steam, everything resumes as if the router cleared out all the data steam sent it and settled back down. are there any other possibilities for this to be happening/ways to fix it? I don't want to go out and get another router due to one game (or set of games) but also want a router that isnt going to choke on itself when updating the server browser list in steam and steam games. |

You could try disabling IPv6 for the network device in Vista, but there’s only a slim chance that’s related to the problem. I’ve never used steam, but it sounds like the kind of data flow that P2P is, a many to one connection, your router being the one?

tried that. no help. what did help a bit was disabling all of the IPv4 TCP and UDP checksum offloading on my desktop's NIC. and by some i mean it worked for a few more seconds before the same problems arose. from what i can gather and what ive read elsewhere, it has to do with the number of max simultaneous UDP connections the router can handle. so, is there any way to change this number? or at least the timeout length before it drops inactive connections? if not, since none of my friend are experiencing this problem with routers from other brands, I may have to simply buy a new router that doesn't seem to suffer from this limitation. |

With P2P software like uttorents it is possible to limit the maximum number of connections, and also specify maximum download and upload rates. Do similar options exist for the Steam program?

As far as i know, they do not. uTorrent does not give me this issue btw. i believe its set for a max connection of 200 at any one time. that number is obviously a lot lower than the connections Steam tries to initiate.
