Default Lost internet connection after power outage

First off, yes, I HAVE read the "Troubleshooting" sticky.

I have lost internet connection after a power outage - PC now connects to the router OK, all lights on as normal, but no internet connection.

I followed the advice in the sticky:

[START QUOTE]

Internet access was working ok, suddenly no Internet access
Symptom(s): You may be experiencing these

- recent power outage
- wired or wireless connection to router seems OK

Resolution(s): For whatever reason, the connection from the router to the modem occassionally loses synchronization. Try these tips to improve router performance.

- depending on your NETGEAR model, access the admin utility by "192.168.1.1", "192.168.0.1", or "routerlogin.net"
- go to Router Status > Connection Status
- click "Connect" to manually connect to ISP
- should get WAN IP after a few seconds
- if router connection to modem continues to occur regularly, check with your ISP for any issues,or try upgrading the firmware on your router.

[END QUOTE]

But to no avail. On clicking "Connect", the display reads:

Negotiation - LCP is allowed to come up

immediately followed by:

LCP down
CHAP authentication failed

I will contact my ISP by telephone this evening (I am in the UK), but thought I would check on here if there was anything else I could try first.

Thanks for reading.

Hi

http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index....fpid1294003727

gives the info re LCP.

In the power outage, did you lose the logon settings, because it would appear you are connecting to the exchange (see link above), but the server is not allowing you to logon (CHAP message)

By logon settings I assume you mean the ISP's server IP address(es), etc.?

That was my first thought, but these still look OK. I phoned my ISP helpdesk last night, but their system was down - I'll be calling them again this evening.

Watch this space...

Hi

Neither do I, looks like the link is stuffed, however, from memory it explained the concepts of LCP and CHAP in the process of connecting to the internet.

OK, not to worry.

Update: I contacted my ISP and checked all my router settings with them, they confirm that everything is OK. They suggested "reinstalling" the router. My thought was to download the latest firmware from Netgear and install that - worth trying? Obviously I'd have to do this from my work connection (where I'm typing this at the moment) and take it home on a datastick. What do you think?

Latest: I've installed the latest release of the firmware. No good. I've spoken to my ISP again and changed my login password (just in case there was a probem with that). No good. I still get the "LCP down" and "CHAP Authentication failed" messages.

Hi

have you looked at the statistics (router status, show statistics, popup)

Then see what the ,ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed, Line Attenuation and Noiise Margin figures are.

also check all the phone connections/filters.

Regards
